GIFF: Guanajuato International Film Festival, 2026
Alagôa’s experimental short XYZ (2026) had its Mexican Premiere at the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF), with screenings taking place in Guanajuato Capital and San Miguel de Allende.
Alagôa attended both parts of the festival, presenting the film and participating in conversations with audiences following the screenings. The Q&A sessions opened a dialogue around the film’s relationship with Structural Film and single-frame animation, as well as Alagôa’s ongoing interest in the mechanics of perception and in the ways movement, rhythm and spatial transformation can emerge through the cinematic apparatus and the act of viewing itself.
The festival also provided an opportunity to encounter filmmakers and audiences from Mexico and abroad, while discovering two cities deeply connected to the cultural and architectural history of the region. Between screenings, Alagôa explored Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende, as well as the pre-Hispanic archaeological site of Cañada de la Virgen, whose relationship between architecture, landscape and human observation resonated with some of the perceptual and spatial questions underlying his own practice.
Presenting XYZ at GIFF marked an important step in the film’s international circulation and its first presentation in Mexico.
