Paint your film! 2026

Alagôa brought back the workshop Paint your film! to Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’Art Contemporain, this time as part of the 2026 edition of Luxembourg Museum Days.

Across two days, visitors of all ages were invited to discover analog film through a hands-on collective workshop centered around 16mm clear leader. Working without cameras, screens or digital devices, participants painted directly onto the surface of the film strip using inks, markers, brushes and other materials, creating a collaborative moving image frame by frame.

Participants were also introduced to basic film handling techniques, including cutting, assembling and splicing 16mm film, before viewing the final results through an analog Elf film projector.

Paint your film! approaches cinema as a physical and tactile medium — something that can be touched, painted, cut, assembled and projected through light. The workshop invites collective experimentation and playful interaction with the materiality of film, encouraging curiosity around cameraless filmmaking, abstraction, colour, movement and the history of experimental cinema.

Bringing together children, families and museum visitors of different ages, the workshop fostered a shared space of experimentation, collaboration and discovery through analog projection.
